2006 National Elections

Guyanese are scheduled to go to the polls for their eight general election since Independence on May 26th 1966


When?

Sometime after August 2006. Geocom the independent authority in charge of national elections have not yet announced the actual date.

Preparations are ongoing. Parliament has been dissoloved as is required before an election.

2007 World Cup Cricket

The 2007 World Cup Cricket tournament will be played in nine Caribbean Countries including Guyana. Matches in Guyana will be played at the new Providence Stadium on the East Bank of Demerara.


Four groups of four teams will play matches from March 13 to April 28 2007 in nine Caribbean countries:

  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Barbados
  • Grenada
  • Guyana
  • Jamaica
  • St. Kitts and Nevis
  • St. Lucia
  • St. Vincent and the Grenadines
  • Trinidad and Tobago

 

First round matches are played from March 13 to March 25.

 

Guyana Matches are scheduled for March 28- April 3 2007

 

Guyana is scheduled to host four of the Super Eight matches. The Super Eight is the group of winners and runner ups in the original set of four groups.

Guyana's Fortieth Independence Anniversay Celebrations

There will be three performances on May 26, 27 and 28 at the Guyana National Cultural Centre Homestretch Avenue Georgetown Guyana.

 

The production is specifically for Guyana's 40th independence anniversary celebrations.

 

A GEMS Theatre Productions press release says "We've put together a team of Guyanese creators and performers here of the highest calibre. They will bring something to the Cultural Centre stage unlike anything seen there before. "This show will leave Guyanese feeling good about their culture."

The celebrations, commemorating the 40th anniversary of Guyana 's independence, will be held at the L'Amoreaux Community Recreation Center, 2000 Mc Nicoll Avenue , Scarborough .

 

Green land of Guyana opens Thursday May 26th

 

An exhibition celebrating Guyana's 40th Independence Anniversary will open on Thursday, at the National Gallery of Art, Castellani House.

 

A press release from the gallery said the opening of the exhibition 'Green Land of Guyana: Landscape and Vision in Guyanese Art' also marks International Museum Day, which is being observed under the theme `Museums and Young People'.

 

The exhibition includes works from the National Collections, by artists including Stanley Greaves, Ron Savory, Aubrey Williams, Phillip Moore, Leila Locke, Bernadette Persaud, Marjorie Broodhagen, Terence Roberts, Angold Thompson, Merlene Ellis, Winston Strick and many others.

 

The exhibition opens to the public from Friday and will close on July 29.

Guyanese in London will be hosting a mammoth family sports and fun day from noon on Monday May 29th at the Crystal Palace National Sports Stadium.The Stadium will be transformed into a mini Guyana with traditional Guyanese cuisine and products on sale in "Bourda Market", Track and Field events at "Eve Leary Sports Ground" and Traditional Games in the Rupununi Savannahs"

 

  • Food, Entertainment Showcase

May 26th at Thirst Park

 

Guyanese culture in the form of food, craft and entertainment will be on show at the Thirst Park on May 26th during the "Guyana Flava" 2006 event hosted by the network of Empretec Entrepreneurs. The event will be held from 11 am to midnight on Independence Day and will also include the wider small-business sector.
